How To Mount A TV On The Wall Without Studs?

Home Tips

Have you just bought a TV for yourself to entertain after long hours of working or studying? You can finally spend your night lying on the couch or your bed, enjoying TV shows with a bottle of wine.

What if you don’t have any studs to mount the TV, or your landlord doesn’t allow any drilling in your apartment? Don’t worry, we will make sure that you know how to mount a TV on the wall without studs in this article. Before you jump on doing it, let’s find out something else first.

What You Need Before Mounting A TV On The Wall Without Studs

  • Anchors

Using an anchor to hang your TV on the wall is easiest when you don’t have any stud. They usually come in different shapes and sizes, with the confidence to hold the TV and not damage your wall. They will give you the pull-out strength needed to support something as heavy as your flat-screen TV.

  • Toggle Anchors/Toggle Bolts

You may mistake toggle anchors for screws at first look, but at the end of it you can see the butterfly toggle. A toggle anchor or toggle bolt is a great way to hang your TV on the wall without having to use studs. It will anchor to the back of the wall and force the entire sheet of the wall to resist instead of just pulling at the center. This solution has successfully helped many people to mount their TVs on the wall without studs in a short time as it is extremely strong on its own and easy to install if installed carefully.

  • Molly Bolts

A molly bolt is a good choice when it comes to mounting a TV without studs. With the ability to hold up to 50lbs and the ease of installation, people use it to hang their TVs with no issues occurring along the process. Another thing about a molly bolt is that it is a little harder to use than other anchors, but it can be the preferred solution for a heavy and large TV. An interesting fact is when left untightened, it is really thin, but once tightened in your wall, it becomes completely different with the expansion of the sleeves. Since it has the exact mechanism as a toggle anchor when pulled into your wall, the molly bolt will create an anchor to the back of your wall, and then you can replace its screws with the screws for your TV wall mount.

  • Ceiling Mounts

Although mounting your TV from the ceiling is not a common choice, it is still an excellent option for you to mount your TV with no studs. This method may cost you more time and be more difficult than you want, but it’s a secure way to hang your TV. Besides, using a ceiling mount will be extremely helpful if your house or apartment lacks wall space or you want your TV to be hung in the middle of the room.

All ways to hang your TV with no studs mentioned above have their own benefits and drawbacks. Depending on your house’s design and the size and weight of your TV, you can choose which one is your best suitable method. Considering all the pros and cons of each technique, I personally recommend you to use an anchor to attach your TV to the wall because:

  • Pretty cheap to get
  • It is easy to install
  • It has different shapes and sizes, making it easy for you to choose the suitable one for your house

Step-by-step Process To Mount A TV Using Anchors

  • Choose the right anchors

You should be aware of your TV’s size and weight before you jump into choosing the anchors to hang your TV. Some easy ways to know your TV’s weight and size are by looking it up online, looking at its box, manual, etc. After knowing your TV’s size and weight, you should start looking for the proper anchors that can support your TV.

  • Choose the situation to hang your TV

Once you choose the right anchors for your TV, you should find a spot that you like best and is hollow – without studs. Mark the area you want to hang your TV and make sure it’s at your eye level.

  • Unbox The Mount And Attach The Brackets To Your TV

You will see four different screw holes on the back of your TV, where you will assemble and attach the bracket. There are a bunch of patterns that your mount may include, but most TVs will have a little sticker at the back of the TVs telling you which pattern you should use. After assembling the components of your bracket, you can use the screws and washers provided when you purchased the mount to attach the bracket to the TV.

Keep in mind that the screws are pretty easy to strip, so you will want to use a drill with a limit to hold them. Or you just need to be extra careful when you drill these screws. Once you finish shooting the screws, if the bracket is fully secured, you can move on to the next step.

  • Mark The Anchors And Drill Into The Wall

Measure the area and mark where the anchors will go through the holes. Then, you can use toggle anchors or molly bolts to attach the plywood or the mounting plate to the wall.

  • Tighten The Screws

Use the screws to replace the toggles, attach the plywood or the mounting plate, tighten the screws to the wall and the plywood carefully, and ensure it’s secured once you finish.

  • Screw The TV Bracket

Choose the suitable screws to tighten the TV bracket to the plywood. If the TV is too heavy, ask for someone’s help to hold it with you.
