But that’s one of the worst things you can do. Ignoring your mattress and not giving it regular cleans can lead to the formation of yellow stains. Yellow mattress stains are something that most of us have noticed but never knew how to deal with.

Even if you have the highest-quality memory foam or the best mattress for an adjustable bed, you will still encounter mattress stains.

That’s why in this article, we’ll talk about what causes yellow stains on your beautiful mattress, how to clean them, and how to prevent them as well.

What Causes Yellow Stains on Mattress?

The ugly yellow stains that we see so often on our mattresses are caused by several factors. Here’s what they are.

  1. Sweat – Sweat is one of the most major contributing factors towards yellow stains. Now, we all know that sweat is colorless, and it initially is. But over the years, as it soaks into the mattress, it gains a yellowish tinge and imparts the same color to the mattress as well. This is the reason behind the yellowing of bedclothes and pillows as well.
  2. Oil – Another significant reason is oil. Most of us have the habit of eating or at least snacking in bed. As a result, we often end up spilling food or crumbs. The oil that is present in these bits of food soak into the mattress as well, and contribute to the yellow-hued stains that the mattress develops. Excess collection of oil can lead to the formation of fungi and bacteria.
  3. Urine – Urine is one of the more expected factors as urine has a yellow tinge to it naturally. Bedwetting by children, by over-excited pets, or even by someone with an ailment is common. However, if not taken care of, the urine can soak into the mattress and leave deep yellow stains there. Not only does it make the mattress look bad and ruin the quality, but it also creates an unhygienic sleeping area.
  4. Mold – While mold is a big contributor to the creation of yellow stains, it is also the result of the mixture of the above three things. As sweat, urine, oil, and other miscellaneous substances collect on the mattress, it leads to the growth of mold which causes those yellow patches on the mattress. Mold is in no way good and sleeping on a moldy mattress will have a bad effect on your health and well-being.

How To Remove Yellow Mattress Stains

Now that you know what causes yellow stains, let’s take a look at how you can remove them.

Soapy Water

The most tried and trusted method of getting rid of not only mattress stains but all kinds of stains is soapy water.

Step 1: Combine equal parts of liquid soap and lukewarm water and create a sudsy solution.
Step 2: Then, take a washcloth, dip it in the soapy water and rub it in circles around the stain. Make sure to apply enough pressure. Otherwise, the stains will not be removed.
Step 3: Finally, take a dry cloth and dab the areas you’ve washed to soak up the remaining water. You can also use a hairdryer for faster drying.
Step 4: If the stains remain, redo steps 2 and 3 till the stains are entirely removed.

Hydrogen Peroxide

When the stains are particularly strong and crusty, and not removable by soapy water, you can use a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water.

Step 1: Fill a spray bottle with hydrogen peroxide and spritz it liberally on the yellow stains.
Step 2: Let the substance sit on the stains for a while and rub the substance onto the area. Repeat this as long as it takes for the stain to disappear.
Step 3: Rub away any of the excesses that remain.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

If you don’t have hydrogen peroxide in hand, you can also use baking soda and vinegar in its place. Here’s how.

Step 1: Spray the vinegar on the stained areas of the mattress and let it soak for a while. Make sure that you spray liberally.
Step 2: Next, apply some baking soda on the areas and allow it to stay as long as possible. Overnight is best.
Step 3: Scrape away the dried excess and wipe off any remaining bits.

How To Prevent Mattress Stains

If you’re getting tired of seeing mattress stains, here are a few ways you can prevent them.

  1. Flip your mattress regularly. Once every three to four months, switch your mattress from top to bottom. This will allow the mattress to dry and remain good for longer.
  2. Change the sheets as frequently as possible. Switching the bedsheets will prevent grime, like sweat and urine, from soaking into the mattress.
  3. Buying a mattress cover will give your mattress an extra layer of protection and keep it protected from moisture and body fluids.
